About Little Professor

Picture it, 1973…

The shop was first opened by Paul and Dianne Seitz in 1973 on what’s known as “The Curve” in downtown Homewood (the corner of 19th and 29th). In the 1980s, an arson incident completely destroyed the shop and an antique store behind it. The insurance company deemed the fire a “total loss,” however, Paul was able to sell remaining intact books at a substantial discount from the parking lot in the days following the fire. Once the building was repaired and new inventory stocked, Little Professor re-opened its doors.

Paul Seitz, the owner of Little Professor, is a retired baseball player who spent 10 years in the pros and played for the Birmingham Barons in the mid 1960s. He is shown above as a player on the first integrated baseball team in the state. Paul is on the top row, 5th from the right (#17). He loves reminiscing about his baseball days with other baseball fans.

In 1992, Little Professor moved to its second location, a larger building with a cafe, just down the street from the original shop. In 2016, Paul and Dianne sold the building to a developer and relocated the shop to its third and current home on 18th Street South, directly across from the original location!

Today, Little Professor proudly sits in the heart of Homewood. The shelves are stocked with everything from new releases to timeless classics, best sellers to would-be hits. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable and will be happy to make recommendations or help you find your new favorite read.

You're sure to find something to inspire and delight you at the Little Professor. And if you can’t find what you’re looking for, we’ll be happy to order it. We can usually have it in-store ready for pick-up within 2 days (yes, just as fast as Amazon Prime). Why not stop by today?
